Volunteer Spotlight
Every year volunteers at the Delta Museum and Archives contribute over 5,000 hours of their time to lead school programs, assist visitors, interpret exhibits, help out in the office, work on special events and support our collections and research areas.
We are proud of their dedication and committment and from time to time we will "spotlight" one volunteer from our diverse and talented group of people in appreciation of all that they do for the Delta Museum and Archives.
Kay Foord has been a dedicated volunteer at the Delta Museum & Archives for the past 22 years. Having moved to BC from another province, volunteering at the Museum was a good way to get to know the community. Weather it has been sitting on the Board, helping out at Canada Day or working in the front office, Kay has been there for the Museum. "It is a well run organization, docent and volunteers are well trained and the staff are very friendly and easy to work with. You always feel appreciated." Thank you Kay for ALL you have done!
Val Allen started volunteering with the Delta Museum and Archives over 10 years ago, sustained by her sense of humour and courage to take on new challenges. She has worked in the archives and the museum on many different projects including dustring artifacts (ask her about dusting the moose head!), describing photographs, organizing a large postcard collection, and indexing Edgar Dunning's Rambling articles. Val is currently in charge of maintaining our popular collection of local obituaries. "There is always something interesting to do here, and if I ever have any questions, there is always someone around to answer them." Carry on Val!
Eunice Getz started volunteering at the Delta Museum and Archives in 2002 transferring the hard copy catalogue records of the Museum's collection into our electronic database. By September 2008 her speedy typing fingers had entered over 9000 object records spanning from 1968 to present day. Because of her perseverance the entire collection is now completely entered and electronically accessible to the Curator. Eunice has enjoyed the opportunity to stroll through Delta's rich history at the DMA and being part of the enthusiastic group of people. We would like to thank Eunice and look forward to seeing her as she continues to work on improving the records.
Don Farquhar began scanning and digitizing photographs in the Archives in 2005 and regularly volunteers two afternoons each week, except when he is traveling about the world. He has calculated that, using the archives' procedures, it takes 44 keystrokes and ten minutes per digitized photo. At that rate, Don figures he has a job at the Delta Museum and Archives until at least 2032. Don also volunteers with the Cammidge House Committee. His concern for preserving our heritage is stated in one of his favorite quotes: "Of all national assets archives are the most precious: they are the gift of one generation to another."
Sue Legault has been volunteering at the Delta Museum and Archives in many capacities since 2004. Although she primarily works as a Docent delivering school programs to children in grades kindergarten to seven, she has also helped out in the a rchives, with our collections and for special events. Sue is a very dedicated and hard working volunteer, sometimes contributing around twenty hours a week to the museum. Sue enjoys volunteering because she likes the people she works with and really enjoys the kids, especially their reactions to what we teach them. We would like to thank Sue for all of the time and energy she has contributed to the museum over the years.
